Hi, I’m Andrew Alegre from QC, PH! I’m an aspiring game developer and a freelance software technology developer. I am from the Rock Ed Route 196 group and recently decided to help out the cause to shell out from the apathy (yes, the word) that bore from the culture of self-serving wants, goals, and obligations.
I found out about Rock Ed a while back because I wanted to help out teaching computer literacy, something I have been passionately doing in any opportunity I come across, mostly through speaking through some small school seminars and activities.
“How do I…?”, certainly the most pressing question that kept popping in my mind while in the middle of the volunteer orientation, made me wonder, how I would help out Rock Ed as a volunteer who, being a computer guy, certainly does not have much experience being “in the field”. This presented me a unique opportunity of helping out, in a way that I believe I can contribute in a more effective way.
The Project
As I have openly suggested on the meetup, the idea I have come up with is a website very similar to, and inspired by, freerice.com (if you haven’t seen it yet, go check it out!), but designed in the fashion that has the potential to accomplishes some major things including, but not limited to becoming:
- An avenue for teaching in a question-and-answer way: we present questions with at least 5 answer choices and, after which, explain the correct answer for the given question. With carefully designed questions and answers, at the very least, we can help out students on their tests.
- An avenue for further broadcasting our call for help: having such a website opens up different opportunities for RockEd, such as garnering an international audience that may have the resources to help us out for the cause.
- An avenue for fundraising: Internet Ad revenue is something that has been a big secret among top bloggers and websites. It has single-handedly funded a good amount of start-up IT companies and individuals. We can put up moderated advertisements from ad networks that are willing to support our cause. This makes the project a good potential to both raise funds for projects and at the same time educate the online community. We can also solicit donations through the website or even sell ad space for a fixed cost per view.
- An avenue for promoting awareness and participation: Having an interactive website opens up a whole new dimension of audiences, people in very different walks of life. Not only do we increase the awareness of people about the cause, we also have the potential to solicit participation online.
What I Need Help On
Currently, with the project in conceptualization, I really need help on the following:
Volunteers: I need all the help I can get, from contacting, checking out, and organizing with the advertisement networks to sorting out some implementation details with all of RockEd. Artists and Designers are very welcome! Educators are welcome to help out write and/or design the questions and answers! Anybody is welcome to help!
Ideas / Suggestions: Building a question-and-answer website is fairly simple. Making the website effective on a large scale (target audience acceptance, feature list, propaganda, etc.) is a very different story. I believe by pooling all our ideas, we can come up with a website that fully envelops the things we want for it to be and become a very active one, not just to be a website that is simply existing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
For the project’s plan of action, it can be found here:

Just to set it on stone, all profits will go directly to RockEd and the projects they help fund.
With all that, this would be my first volunteer project for RockEd and for the Philippines! Hopefully we could truly accomplish a website that is interactive, useful and at the same time supports the provision of funds and voice for the cause.
Thank you!
Mabuhay po tayong lahat!
